AB OBJECTIVE. To prevent the spread of HIV among young adults through a
comprehensive HIV/AIDS education and empowerment program led by members
of fraternities and sororities. METHODS. This program included: 1)
Development of training modules; 2) Training of peer educators; 3) KAP
Surveys; 4) Development of information materials; 5) On campus
workshops, condom and brochure distribution and other outreach projects.
RESULTS. The program gave rise to a broader sex education program that
included discussions on sexual identity, roles and responsibilities.
CONCLUSIONS. This program was able to bridge the gap between knowledge
and behavioral changes by utilizing peer support systems. Peer pressure
also assured the maintenance of safer sex behaviors.
